This is not a mere fantasy but a reality. You will remember that in ancient times our sages used to live for hundreds of years by practicing yoga, penance, consuming daily diet and medicines. Come, let us see what is so special about this medicinal, yogya, iron-rich and divine food flaxseed. The botanical name of flaxseed is Linum Usitatissimyani which is a very useful seed. Flaxseed plant bears blue flowers. Flaxseed seed is small like a ball, brown or green in colour and has a smooth surface. Since ancient times, flaxseed has been used for making food, clothes, fragrances and coloured pigments. When we used to have boils or pimples, our grandmother used to make a compress of flaxseed and apply it on us. The main nutritional elements in flaxseed are omega-3 fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid, lignans, protein and fibre. Linseed is beneficial from infancy to old age. Mahatma Gandhi also did research on health and wrote many books. He also did research on linseed, used its beneficial properties and wrote in one of his books, “Wherever linseed is consumed, that society will remain healthy and prosperous.”

The story of essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6:

Flaxseed contains about 18-20 percent of omega-3 fatty acid ALA. Flaxseed is the biggest source of omega-3 fatty acid on earth. To fully understand the beneficial effects of flaxseed on our health, we need to understand omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in detail. Both omega-3 and omega-6 are essential for our body, that is, they cannot be produced in the body, we have to consume them through food. Apart from flaxseed, omega-3 is also found in fish, walnuts, vegetables etc. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids called DHA and EPA, these are produced in the body from ALA present in flaxseed. Omega-6 is found in abundance in oils like peanut, soybean, safflower, corn etc. Omega-3 plays an important role in the development and proper functioning of various organs of our body, especially the brain, nervous system and eyes. The tissues of our cells are made of omega-3 or phospholipids. When there is a deficiency of omega-3 in our body, these tissues are made of hard form omega-6 fat or trans fat instead of soft and flexible omega-3. And this is where diseases like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, obesity, cancer etc. start in our body. Due to lack of omega-3 in the body and excess of omega-6 which causes inflammation, prostanol-E2 is formed which attracts lymphocytes and macrophages and then produces cytokines and cox enzymes. Just as for making a good film both a hero and a villain are necessary, similarly for the proper functioning of our body both Omega-3 and Omega-6 should be in equal proportion i.e. 1:1. For the last six decades, the amount of Omega-6 in our food is increasing and Omega-3 is decreasing. Fast food and junk food sold by multinational companies are full of Omega-6. All refined oils available in the market are also full of Omega-6 fatty acids. Recent research has revealed that due to very less Omega-3 and excessive Omega-6 in our food, we are suffering from diseases like high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, gout, depression, asthma, cancer etc. This deficiency of Omega-3 can be fulfilled by eating 30-60 grams of flaxseed. It is these omega-3s that give flaxseed the status of a super star food. Women attain full femininity only when their body gets adequate omega-3.

Flax seed keeps our blood balanced. Flax seed increases the amount of good cholesterol (HDL-Cholesterol) in our blood and reduces the amount of rhinolides and bad cholesterol (LDL-Cholesterol). Lignan acts like estrogen or female hormone in plants.
